I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

Lake Padden Relays is the local cross country kick off race, and our local running club put together some teams.  Each runner runs around the lake once, 2.65 miles.  I hadn't even met my teammates until just before the race!  I went first, and ran 19:37.  We put the two younger, slower runners in the middle, and the other 54 year old faster runner at the end, and came it at 1:22:23, just seconds ahead of the second place age group team.  We are all thinking it is pretty fun to win the 40-49 year old division!  Divisions are based on average age, and our two middle runners were in their early 40s.

Home by noon, in the car and headed up to the approach to Mt. Baker, so that we can climb it on Sunday!  The crosstraining miles are the 1.5 hour hike into base camp.  My back got tired; I am not used to the heavy pack :)

I don't even know how to put this in crosstraining mileage.  The ascent of Mt. Baker took 6.5 hours, 5000 vertical feet, plus the 2000 we hiked to base camp yesterday.  Then the 7000 vertical foot descent.  Not home in Bellingham until 7pm.

Absolutely wonderful to climb again!  To stand on the summit of a snow covered peak is a truly breathtaking experience.  Or maybe just the elevation is breathtaking.  Good times!  My son, who is almost 21, was my guide, and he is really quite remarkable.  Such a gift to share this experience with him.  I haven't climbed a mountain in 20 plus years!

My legs feel as if they had run a marathon!  Except that I am never this sore after a marathon.  My daughter drug me out for a jog this morning, it helped!  Hyperrecovery mode now so that I can race on Saturday!

A tiny bike ride and a tiny run.  Legs are feeling better; in fact, MUCH better today than yesterday.  I think I will make it to Saturday's race after all!

Duathlon today, combined with an extra hour and a quarter of jogging.  The duathlon went great!  There had been reports all week of smokey air due to some wildfires, so I was afraid that maybe the race would be cancelled.  But the air had a barely noticeable smokey flavor when I arrived Saturday morning.  I had time, so I jogged the 3 mile loop before the race, then lined up with all the other duathletes for the start!  My legs felt about 90% recovered from last weekend, but I felt really ready to race!  First run was 3.1 miles according to my Garmin, and I did it in 21:42, hopped on the bike, and rode 12 miles in 40:38.  Second run was 3.3 miles (slightly different course, so that we could finish on the track), and it took 24:08.  Not too far off of 5K pace for the running, but I wish the bike ride was faster!

I was second woman, and third person overall!  I went for my extra running while waiting for the triathlon to finish and then came back for awards and some food.

Mountain biking recovery day!  Beautiful trails here in Bend, not very technical, fast and smooth!  Exceptionally nice day.  We were out there for 5 hours.

Long run day.  Two hours at almost exactly a 10 minute pace.  Legs felt surprisingly fresh and springy.  No recovery at all necessary from Saturday's 2 5K efforts, bike sprint, and hour long run.  Go figure!  Now, why did it take days to recover from a little old mountain climb?
